Window Screen Repair & Replacement: The Complete Guide

Window screen repair by NG Windows and Doors

Torn screens are one of the most common — and most overlooked — repair calls we get. They're easy to ignore until bugs start getting in or a screen door won't stay on its track, but fixing them is usually quick, inexpensive, and done the same visit as anything else on your work order. Here's what you need to know about window screen repair and replacement.

Signs Your Screens Need Attention

  • Visible tears, holes, or sagging mesh
  • A frame that's bent, cracked, or won't sit flush in the track
  • A sliding screen door that jumps its track or won't roll smoothly
  • Mesh that's discolored or brittle from years of Southern California sun
  • Gaps around the edges where bugs are getting through

Repair or Full Replacement?

Most torn or sagging screens are a straightforward repair — we re-screen the existing frame with new mesh, which is faster and less expensive than replacing the whole unit. Full replacement makes more sense when the frame itself is bent, cracked, or no longer fits the track properly, which happens more often on older aluminum-frame windows common throughout the Valley and Inland Empire.

Window Screens vs. Screen Doors

We repair and rebuild both. Window screens are usually the quicker fix — a torn screen typically takes minutes to re-mesh. Sliding screen doors see more wear because they're used daily, so track cleaning and roller adjustment often go hand-in-hand with the screen work itself to keep the door gliding smoothly afterward.

Why the Sun Matters More Here Than You'd Think

Screen mesh breaks down faster under constant UV exposure than in milder climates, which is why screens that look fine one summer can turn brittle and tear the next. If you're noticing more than one screen going at once, that's usually just sun-related wear across windows installed around the same time — not a sign anything else is wrong with the window itself.

What to Expect at the Visit

Screen repair is almost always a same-visit fix. Guy or Adam will look at every screen while they're already there for any other window or door work, rebuild or replace what's torn, and clean up when finished. There's no separate trip needed just for screens in most cases.
